Want to Develop a Cross-platform App? Read This First!

Developing a cross-platform application is now one of the preferred options when creating a mobile application. The convenience that it provides – one source code for multiplenplatforms – makes such development type a compelling option.

There are many hybrid framework for cross-platform development available nowadays, each providing their set of advantages and limitations.

While the Mitrais team has compiled a similar report last year, the ever-progressing trend in the IT industry makes it necessary to revisit the report.

This year, the team’s special report analyses the strong and weak points of nine chosen hybrid mobile app development frameworks, four frameworks more compared to last year. They are PhoneGap, Titanium, Ionic, Telerik, Xamarin, React Native, Kony, Senca Touch, and the Framework7.

Mitrais mobile developers have discussed the important factors as well as the common issues that they face when developing cross-platform applications, resulting in a number of criteria with which the team evaluated the frameworks with.

In Licensing the team look at the availability of the platform and whether they are licensed or open sourced. Depending on the type, it may affect the total development cost.

The product support is also important as it analyses the type of support available for each framework, whether from official sources or online communities. This criteria takes into account the availability of official support documentation or manual, the popularity of the framework in the communities, and the responses by the community members or the professional support providers.

A framework is considered easy to adopt if the development language that it uses can be picked up and used by the developers quickly. How difficult the application is to be run later on is also taken into consideration as some framework require more tools and configurations than others in order to accomplish this.

Applications developed by different framework support different hardware and sensors, hence the team also evaluates the type of native mobile components each framework can work with.

Each framework offers different sets of widget/components that can be used in developing an application. When a framework provides more widgets, it means less need for the developers to create their own components prior to the development stage.

The popularity of each framework is measured through the number of big names who support and/or use the framework as well as the number of applications developed with said framework found in Google Play and Apple App Store.

Taking into account the various factors mentioned above, the Mitrais team has come to the conclusion that Ionic is likely the best tool that will fit most developers in terms of hybrid application development, followed by Reach-Native.

However, depending on certain conditions, other framework is also ideal, for instance Xamarin would be a good fit for developers who have .NET background but little to moderate experience in developing native Android and/or iOS application.
