Microsoft looks to Linux for security

Microsoft has announced a preview of Azure Sphere, a solution for creating secure consumer gadgets, household appliances and industrial devices which are expected to come online over the next decade.

At the heart of Azure Sphere is a customised Linux kernel.

The solution has three components:

  • Azure Sphere certified microcontrollers, which combine both real-time and application processors with built-in security technology and connectivity. Custom silicon secures the MCU and the device it powers.
  • Azure Sphere OS: Unlike the real-time operating systems used today, this offer multiple layers of security. It used security innovations developed for Windows and a custom Linux kernel.
  • Azure Sphere Security Service: This turnkey, cloud service that guards every Azure Sphere device and brokers trust for device-to-device and device-to-cloud communication through certificate-based authentication.

The company said it expected the first Azure Sphere devices to be on shelves by the end of the year. Development kits are expected to be released by mid-year.
